The Research and Development (R&D) Department at NITDA is setup to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation by fostering innovation, enabling impactful research, and promoting the adoption of emerging technologies. Established in March 2022, the department bridges scientific knowledge and practical applications to address national challenges, enhance productivity, and position Nigeria as a global leader in IT.

Through strategic collaborations and research-driven initiatives, the department ensures the integration of cutting-edge technologies like AI, blockchain, and IoT into the national economy. Its efforts support innovation, ethical practices, and sustainable growth in line with NITDA’s strategic goals.

Mandate

To position Nigeria as a global leader in digital research and innovation by:

Conducting impactful research and development initiatives tailored to national challenges and global technological trends.

Advancing the adoption, adaptation, and diffusion of emerging technologies.

Building strategic partnerships and facilitating knowledge transfer between academia, industry, and government.

Enhancing research skills and fostering a culture of innovation to strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge economy.

Ensuring ethical practices and regulatory compliance in IT research and innovation.

Objectives:

Innovative IT Solutions Development: Conduct cutting-edge research to develop solutions addressing national challenges and improving productivity across sectors.

Emerging Technologies Support: Promote adoption and integration of technologies such as AI, blockchain, IoT, and quantum computing, consistent with the goal of positioning Nigeria among global leaders in emerging technologies.

Collaborative Research: Partner with academic, industrial, and international organizations to advance IT knowledge and applications, fostering strategic partnerships.

Capacity Building: Implement programs to develop research skills among IT professionals and young innovators. These initiatives will include specialized training, mentorship, and workshops designed to enhance expertise in cutting-edge research methodologies.

Technology Transfer and Commercialization: Facilitate the transfer of research outcomes to the market by supporting the commercialization of innovative IT products and services, fostering entrepreneurship, and driving economic growth.

R&D Infrastructure Development: Establish and maintain facilities for advanced IT research and experimentation, enhancing Nigeria’s research capabilities.
